How We Started

Friends R Fun Child Development Center in Summersville had a humble beginning 40 years ago in a basement room at the Summersville Seventh Day Adventist Church with toys brought from volunteers’ homes or donated by the community.But as Director Judy Olson points out, they wanted to help Nicholas County by fulfilling a need and making a difference in their community. With no childcare centers in the county at all before they opened in 1986, they certainly have filled a void.

What we offer

We Currently serve over 200 full and part-time children from infancy through 12 years of age and employ around 30 full and part time staff.  The Center is now housed in a facility of over 4,000 sq. ft. in nine developmentally appropriate classrooms, one of which is a preschool classroom set up in collaboration with the Nicholas Board of Education.  Two school-age classrooms provide activities that not only help maintain the children's academic skill over the summer but also provide enrichment activities after school and on school holidays in areas such as science, nutrition, cooking, music, physical exercise and exposure to community activities.  The Center is not only WV State Licensed but is also nationally accredited by NAEYC (National association for the Education of Young Children), which is a voluntary accreditation of higher quality.
